Alfons is a well-known scientist closely associated with the University of Tübingen in Germany. Since 1976, his research has been related to the transmission dynamics of human onchocerciasis, the vectorial capacity of Simulium species, parasites of cattle, including Schistosoma species. His studies have covered immunology, epizootiology, the development of DNA probes for the identification of Onchocerca-larvae in Simulium vector flies, Wolbachia endosymbionts of filarial parasites, and the development of a stochastic mathematical model of human onchocerciasis. His research has been supported by WHO/TDR/OCP, the Commission of the European Communities, DFG (Germany), National Inst. for Med. Research, Institut de Recherches Zootechniques et Vétérinaires, to mention a few. He has widely published in peer-reviewed journals on the subjects mentioned above.
